Iron & Odour Removing Filters

Iron is commonly found in rocks and soil throughout the world. Under the proper conditions, iron will leach into the water supply from the rock and soil formations. If iron is present in the water where concentrations exceed 0.3 ppm, staining can occur. This staining can affect plumbing fixtures, dish ware, clothes, and will produce a yellow to reddish appearance in water. These levels may also impart taste and/or odor. The EPA has established a secondary drinking water regulation of 0.3 ppm of water. This is not federally enforceable, since it is not considered a health risk.

Combining a filtration system with your water conditioner is your easiest, most convenient way to further improve the taste, smell, clarity and overall quality of your water. Depending on the filtering media you use, a good quality filtration system will eliminate objectionable tastes and odours; remove chlorine along with precipitated iron and manganese. It will decrease turbidity - that unappealing cloudiness caused by suspended particles of mud, silt, clay, sand, grit and sediment.

The Drop on Water: Iron Bacteria and Sulphur Bacteria Article

Ferric Hydroxide or Red Water Iron
A divalent iron ion, usually as ferrous bicarbonate, which when dissolved in water produces a clear water solution in the ground. Once exposed to air on the surface, this clear water turns to a rusty brown colour causing staining on all your fixtures, i.e. Tub, Toilet, Sinks Dishwashers, Washing Machines etc. This type of iron in your water is effectively removed by a Water Softener, Birm Filter or a Greensand Filter.

Ferrous Bicarbonate or Clear Water IronIron that finds its way into the ground water can react with CO, to form ferrous bicarbonate. Ferrous bicarbonate or clear water iron is soluble in water and is not visible. This type of iron is effectively removed in low readings by a Water Softener or by a Birm or Greensand Filter. Frequent regenerations are needed to prevent the iron from precipitating to its insoluble form.

Birm Iron Filters

  • An alternate chemical free method for water treatment.

  • Birm is an efficient and economical media for the reduction of dissolved iron and manganese compounds from raw water supplies. Birm acts as an insoluble catalyst to enhance the reaction between dissolved oxygen (D.O.) and the iron compounds.

  • The physical characteristics of Birm provide an excellent filter media which is easily cleaned by back washing to remove the precipitant. Birm is not consumed in the iron removal operation and therefore offers a tremendous economic advantage over many other iron removal methods.

  • Other advantages of Birm include: long material life with relatively low attrition loss, a wide temperature performance range and extremely high removal efficiency. Negligible labor costs are involved because Birm does not require chemicals for regeneration, only periodic back washing is required.

Carbon Filters

This self flushing filter has an Activated Carbon Media and is used extensively for the removal of organic materials, chlorine, and Hydrogen Sulphide (H2S).The contaminants are absorbed by the carbon particles, therefore periodic replacement is necessary.

If you are in an area of high chlorine levels or periodically experience excess chlorine odour or taste, we may have what you are looking for! Most cartridge-type carbon filters are just too small to properly remove chlorine throughout the home and can cause pressure loss and low flow rates. Instead of frequent cartridge changes, these systems backwash and clean themselves automatically.

Nextsand Sediment Filters

A sediment filter is the most common method or removing suspended solids, total dissolved solids (TDS), Ferric Hydroxide  (Red Water Iron) or Sediment from your well or water system. The water passes through a clean bed of well-graded Nexsand, where it is filtered down to 5 Microns of filtration. The filter is then backwashed on a regular basis flushing the sediment down the drain. Nexsand has proven extremely effective and will double the service flow of Multi Media or Sand Filters.

Manganese Greensand Iron Filters

This type of Iron Filter is used for the removal of dissolved iron, red water iron, manganese and hydrogen sulphide (H2S) from your water supply. It effectively removes disagreeable tastes and odours from your water and prevents staining of plumbing and fixtures.

Potassium Permanganate (Pot Perm) is used to oxidize the Greensand media during the regeneration or cleaning of the filter. This causes the iron in your water to turn to a solid state, when passing through the filter. The iron gets trapped in the media and then is flushed down the drain during the Backwash cycle of the regeneration. Pot Perm can be obtainable from BRM Water Conditioning.
